Philosophy is an academic discipline that explores profoundly fundamental and highly general themes concerning human beings, the world, and human actions. As a field characterized by the highest degree of abstraction and the broadest scope of generality, philosophy demands a genuine commitment to scholarship from students who wish to major in it.
The goal of university education is to cultivate a broad liberal education and to provide students with foundational knowledge in their chosen fields of study. Philosophy plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Philosophical reflection on human thought and knowledge, action and custom, life and history, culture and technology is not only indispensable for the enrichment of liberal education but also beneficial in the development of professional expertise. If the aim of education is to foster the capacity to gain a macroscopic perspective on the structure and direction of complex modern society and to form a comprehensive understanding of it, philosophy is the discipline most suited to this purpose.
